I rarely ever watch ABC, so when Lost premiered in last year’s fall schedule, I hadn’t seen any previews. I didn’t even know it was coming on. I heard nothing about it until it was several episodes into the season. Fans were raving, thankfully not with spoilerific information. The only thing I knew was that it was about the survivors of a plane crash and took place on an island (in real life Hawaii).
Since so many seemed to love the show, I was determined to see it. The moment it came out on DVD, I added it as the highest priority in our Blockbuster queue and the first disc was sent out a few days later.
Mark and I held onto the disc for a little while before popping it into the DVD player. I’m not sure what we were afraid of.
One weekend afternoon, I asked Mark if he wanted to watch an episode of Lost. He said no at first, but I whined as I’m prone to do when we keep Blockbuster Online discs too long, and he quickly changed his mind. We watched the first episode, then the second. Soon our afternoon was half over as we finished watching all four episodes on the first disc. To say we were floored was an understatement.
“Have you heard anything about this show?” Mark asked me as we finished the disc, in a pleasant shock by what we’d just seen.
Nope, I only knew it was about the survivors of a plane crash. He didn’t know about anything either. That is not all this show is about. Oh, not nearly!
We returned that DVD to be sent the second disc a few days later. Soon all those episodes were devoured as well. When Season 2 started, we debated over setting up a reoccurring recording on our HD-DVR. We were afraid episodes of Lost would clog up all our DVR space before we got a chance to finish the first season. At the last moment, I decided to go ahead and record it and we’d deal with the issue of DVR space when we crossed that bridge. I can’t say enough how GLAD I am that we did that!
Around this time, Mark’s birthday was coming up so I decided to forgo the Blockbuster rentals and buy the first season outright as I knew we’d watch the episodes over and over and would enjoy lending them out so others could get hooked on Lost too.
Once we had around 5 or 6 Season 2 episodes on the DVR, the space issue was posing a threat. I knew if we didn’t get the DVR cleared by the time we went to Texas for Thanksgiving, we’d have problems. Mark and I made a commitment to finish the first season of Lost and have all the episodes from Season 2 watched and cleared off the DVR before we left for Texas.
This weekend, Mark and I watched Lost nearly nonstop. I’m not sure a person’s supposed to watch that must Lost in a 48 hour period. We breezed through disc after disc until we reached the end of season one and turned our attention toward the saved episodes on our DVR. Here’s where I’m thankful for my decision to record it. I’d really be kicking myself if I had to wait for Season 2 to come out on DVD before starting it!
Right now, we have one or two episodes to go before we are current. I can’t believe we watched that much Lost over the weekend! I’m definitely addicted. It’s my new favorite TV show. I’m not sure how I’m going to cope once we run out of episodes at our fingertips and I don’t even want to think about the hiatus between seasons.
If you haven’t got into Lost and especially if you’ve managed to avoid any spoilers, I would highly recommend renting the first disc of season one to try out a couple episodes. I challenge you to watch two episodes before writing it off as just another show on TV.
To all my reads who watch Lost, I want to thank you for never being spoilerific in your visible posts and without warnings. This show would not have been as good for me if I’d known anything about what would happen.
I’m sooooo glad you like Lost. I bet you have a few theories flying around between you and Mark, knowing you, they are good ones too.
I’ve watched a few shows obsessively like that during a weekend. I devoured 4 seasons of Alias and 24 in a month. Crazy!
There are a few things you may want to check out. There’s a few Lost LJ communities where they talk about theories and there’s the sites ABC has launched along with the show. Have you seen those already?
I’ve been trying to stay away from other sites because I do NOT want to be spoiled, even remotely.
Now we’re completely caught up - watched the last show in our reserve last night and I am VERY disappointed to learn there’s no new episode tonight. Boo!
I started reading the recaps and forums over at Television Without Pity and I’m enjoying them. I know TWOP respects spoiler tags religiously, so I have no worry about stumbling across information I don’t want to see.
It’s one thing to theorize about what’s going on (wow, that last episode was creepy! hope The Others aren’t lame!) but in most “theory” threads, people tend to post a bunch of spoilers, so it takes ALL the fun out of it. I just don’t want to run ANY risk of being spoiled.

Agh! I had no idea Lost was a repeat today. It was last week too. This kind of thing irritates me so much. They get paid enough, why can’t they have fewer repeats?
I dunno. I’m just happy they do 24 episodes per season. Lots of 1-hours like this are skimping more and more with their total number of eps per season so they can take longer summer and winter breaks.
Next week is a new episode though! I looked it up.
Not having episodes sitting there waiting for me to watch is very annoying. I sort of want to start all over and watch Season 1 again, but Mark loaned it out to a friend. I’ll have to live with reading forums and recaps for now.

SHE LIVES! Lost is like crack (i’m assuming this since i’ve never had crack) if you watch one episode, you get totally sucked in.
I’m learing from falling, Ii’m learning from falling down. Hard, lessons.
isn’t it a great show? i’m a little disappointed in this season so far, but it looks like that will all change this week. don’t forget to record this weeks episode - it looks like something big is going to happen!
Yay for “Lost”! It’s great to live where this show is being filmed, and occasionally bumping into film crews and even the stars themselves! My wife and I do a podcast devoted to “Lost,” and have listeners from Nebraska to Norway.
Sorry my Flickr set spoiled at least one piece of the “Lost” story. We’re very careful with spoilers in our show, but when it comes to browsing galleries, I guess sometimes you can’t know what you’re clicking on ‘til it’s too late.
Still, it’s a great show, and there are still lots of secrets out there.
I’m a huge Lost fan, too. My husband and I rented the first season all at one time and watched every episode over a weekend just so that we could be caught up to watch the 2nd season when it started!
I’ve got the 1st season set on my wishlist and I hope I get it for Solstice. I’d love to watch those episodes again now that I have some of my own theories.
I think tonight’s a new episode! Weeeee!
