Last night’s brand new Lost episode centered around the mysterious Mister Eko. Charlie was a huge part of the episode as well. I’m not sure we saw Sayid at all. Again, I have a tolerable amount of Ana Lucia (did she even speak?). I guess Rose and Bernard were back in their tent making up for lost time because they were scarce as well.
There were several important developments in the plot tonight.
Spoilers inside! Do not continue if you haven’t seen the episode!
First, a quick recap: When Eko was younger, his Nigerian town (village?) was invaded. People rode in and started rounding up the children. They pulled Eko’s brother from his arms, placed a gun in his hand and told him to shoot the man they put before him. Eko presumably doesn’t want to expose his younger brother to such a thing, so he runs up, takes the gun and without hesitation shoots the man.
Fast forward to Eko’s adult life, he’s become a force with which to be reckoned. We see him at a meeting where he’s presented with some heroin which he gladly offers to buy for much less than the sellers seem to expect. Eko points out that there’s no market for the drug in Nigeria and it’s near high to impossible to export out of the country, so he’s doing the sellers a favor. The sellers make one wrong move and Eko whips out a knife and slits their throats in one stroke. A scared child is in the room and Eko tells his men to stand down, asking the child to tell others about how he spared his life.
These two scenes help establish Eko’s full character and definitely display a side of him we haven’t seen much of on the island.
As many have suspected, we discover Eko had quite a bit to do with the plane Boone and Locke found in the jungle. It was a plan he conceived to smuggle the drugs out of Nigeria. How that tiny plane found its way from Nigeria to the South Pacific is a mystery to me, which I’m sure will eventually be solved.
I’m glad we’re finally receiving some answers this season. There’s so much going on with the island, it doesn’t seem like it can all be connected. Who knows, maybe it isn’t.
Finding out Eko was essentially responsible for the drug plane was minor compared to two other events in the episode.
When Charlie and Eko were out in the jungle looking for the plane, Eko told Charlie to climb a tree to get a better view. While Charlie was up in the tree, the “monster” tore out of the ground. We get some up-close shots of Charlie and Eko’s faces as we normally do anytime the monster is near. Interestingly, Eko seemed almost to recognize this black wispy “being”. He had a sense of familiarity with it. It got within inches of his face and we saw a wonderful shot of images flashing within it.
It seems to support the “virtual reality” theory going around. The black entity could easily be the thoughts and memories of everyone “plugged in” to the network. Perhaps this thing feeds off fear. Is this the same thing that Locke saw before he stated he stared into the eye of the island and it was beautiful? Is it the same thing that nearly sucked Locke down into its hole? I’m thinking yes. Now, is it the same thing that killed the pilot? I’m not so sure.
Michael had another chat session at the computer with Walt. Jack walked in on Michael and by the time he got around to the computer screen, it was blank again. A few things about this scene screamed to me that it’s all in Michael’s head.
It was a bit too easy to get Walt back into the chat room, wasn’t it? Michael pounds the keyboard a few times and Walt somehow knows that Michael is there waiting for him. Walt doesn’t seem to be able to actually see Michael though because he later asks if he’s alone.
Seconds before Jack walked around to the side of the computer screen, Michael was still fidgety and nervous, as if he could still see the text. Then, in a split second, it was all gone.
Here are the scenarios as I see them:
1. Walt is really speaking to Michael via the computer.
2. Someone other than Walt is really speaking to Michael via the computer.
3. Michael is imagining the whole thing.
4. Walt is speaking to Michael telepathically and Michael is using the computer to rationalize what’s going on in his head.
I’m leaning toward #3 myself, but I also like the idea of #4. I just don’t think anyone’s actually speaking to Michael. Let us all remember not to mistake coincidence for fate. Just because the uncovered film in the previous episode warned them not to use the computer for communication, it doesn’t mean that this sort of thing is what it was referencing.
I’d like to know what YOU think though, so please go take the latest poll and weigh in!
All in all, this was a great episode and I have far too many thoughts to discuss them all in one post. Please feel free to add your speculations and theories for this episode!
I loved this episode. I think this seaseon is really starting to gear up now.
And what, no mention of the fact that Charlie has stashed away about eight of those Virgin Mary statues? That small moment actually blew me away - makes his little show in front of Claire of crumbling up the heroin pretty meaningless, doesn’t it.
There’s just too much to mention!
When I first saw the statues I thought for sure he was still using heroin. I’ll give Charlie the benefit of the doubt until his upcoming episode, where I’m sure this will be addressed again.
We haven’t seen him with any broken Mary statues and only a few days (maybe a week or so?) have passed on the island since he found them. I don’t think he could have gone through a whole baggie by now, let alone all the baggies in a statue.

I don’t think he’s using again .... YET. The stuff with Claire might just push him over the edge, though.
about the “monster”.. i think i’ve decided that my favorite theory so far is the nanobot theory. someone pointed out that it sounds like the Michael Crichton book Prey.I haven’t read the book, but the description and the cover do seem very similar!
did you see the link to the screenshots of the monster i had on my site? you can clearly see images in it! it could be nanobots projecting images as they scan them from mr. Eko’s memory… or it could be something else entirely
I did see the images of Eko’s past in the black cloud (just neglected to mention it - I need to start keeping a notebook with me when I watch TV!).
I’ve heard the nanobot theory as well. If they want to keep it real, there’s little chance nanobots were developed to this level 20 years ago, so if I take the nanobot theory, I’m going to throw in a time travel theory of some sort as well, which seems somewhat plausible considering the weird timelines in this show.
