That was one great episode! It totally made up for all the crappy episodes I’ve put up with this season.
I have more to say, of course, so please only continue reading if you’ve already seen the episode. Spoilers inside! You’ve been warned.
First of all, seeing the tail of the plane crash into the ocean was freakin’ awesome!
What’s up with the title, “The Other 48 Days”? I’m sure I missed something, but I thought that the last day they were on was 45 as “today”. Is that incorrect? Was “today” listed as Day 48? Did anyone else get a Survivoresque feel when they were putting the Day numbers up there?
It didn’t come as a surprise to me that Goodwin was an Other. This answers a lot of questions I had about them. Goodwin obviously spoke English, so I can assume at least some of the others can as well. I still don’t know what’s up with their whispers, but there must be a purpose to them. I think my theory that the Others aren’t killing those they take is still holding up, although they may have killed the first three people they took, as Goodwin pointed out they were strong and threats. They do seem to have a criteria for those they take. They wanted the “good” people. This goes a long way in explaining why the Lostaways haven’t had the same experience.
I wonder if Ethan was put in a similar situation to Goodwin, in that he was spotted, so he decided to blend in. I now do think Ethan was an Other, but I still think he had an agenda different than the rest of Them. Given the behavior of Goodwin and the Others in this episode, I’ll buy the guys in the boat who took Walt are Others. They don’t seem to have any magical stealth powers, they just seem to know how to be quiet, so intercepting the raft is believable. Goodwin demonstrated he had no problem killing someone he perceived to be a “bad person” so I believe the others on the boat would take Walt and then blow up Jin, Michael and Sawyer.
I wonder if this means that Mr. Eko, Bernard, Cindy, Libby and Ana-Lucia (did I forget any of the surviving Tailaways?) are “bad people” since The Others didn’t take them. Mr. Eko (why do I love him SO much?) seems to be a bit tuned into the Others. I think they were probably trying to take him on the first night and he obviously thwarted their plans.
I understand why Goodwin would want to kill Nathan, but what I don’t get is why he brought him out of the hole and pretended he was setting him free first. What difference does that make if he was just going to kill him? I hope there’s a reason for this and it just wasn’t poor writing.
It’s also quite understandable why Jin, Michael and Sawyer were treated as prisoners at first, I certainly don’t blame them for that. I don’t get why Ana-Lucia continued to be so pissy toward them. She hasn’t been as pissy with any of the other Tailaways as she was with these three Lostaways. Did she completely snap on Day 41 and become uber bitch?
Also, it had been quite a while since The Others took any of them. Ana-Lucia found out that Goodwin had infiltrated them. Goodwin told her why the 9 were taken, at least. Everyone who was taken was taken at night, during their sleep. No one had been taken since they started moving. Ana-Lucia seemed to be of the belief that The Others could come out of nowhere and snatch up any of them and that they were omnipresent. What I saw didn’t support this… I understand her wanting to be cautious, but I don’t get why she was so freaked out about them… I mean, they didn’t seem super human, just quiet and quick. So I just don’t really get her behavior in the jungle, although I do understand why she freaked out after Cindy disappeared, she heard voices and then a body comes charging toward her.
Speaking of Cindy, her disappearance is different than the others, for sure. It might not even be The Others that took her, but maybe that weird black misty thing that almost pulled Locke down into a hole. Toward the end, when they were recapping the time that passed after Jin, Michael and Sawyer were found, Cindy was shown walking through a field and looking around, like she was expecting something. Her look around… seemed strange. I think there’s something to it.
I loved it when Bernard got a signal on the radio and it turned out to be Boone in the drug plane right before it crashed to the ground! That was great! It explains Boone’s end of the conversation which I’d all but forgotten!
Okay, here’s a crazy theory. According to Danielle, members on her team started going crazy. According to the hatch, the island is in quarantine. So I’m assuming there’s some virus on the island. The U.S. Army knife and that Dharma video lead me to believe the US was performing experiments on the island, perhaps trying to develop something to make people psychic (or mind readers, which I’m lumping into the same category as psychic here). The infected went crazy and became very psychic. They may have been very religious (the attention they drew to the Bible they found in the crate leads me to believe this) and with their new found psychic ability. They are easily able to read people and their past to determine according to their own set of criteria who they believe to be Good People. I think Locke may be coming down with this illness and it is why he was able to see Boone’s post-crash self talking about Theresa falling up and down the stairs. Claire may also be infected, which would explain the dreams she had of being attacked. Some people might be naturally immune to this illness, such as Danielle.
Once again, my thoughts are scattered and I might have more to say about this episode, but every thing’s so jumbled up in my head right now I can’t think straight. I’ll update this post if I think of something else, which I probably will after reading through the TWOP episode thread.
Updated with More Thoughts: Okay, a few other thoughts…
Bernard is a pussy compared to Rose, huh? Guess we know who wears the pants in that relationship.
Preview for next week - Ana-Lucia better not mess up Sayid! I’m sure the writers don’t want to get me hating Ana-Lucia again! Why the hell was Sayid tied up to a tree and Ana-Lucia roaming free after killing Shannon?
Those one the TWOP forums don’t have the same love for this episode that I do, but that’s ok. I enjoyed it and won’t let them spoil my fun.
the “good people” comment from Goodwin was by far the most intruiging part of the show last night. i didn’t give it much thought until i read your post, but i wonder what he meant by that? he could have meant good as in innocent… we’ve seen the main group of castaways pretty much all have a shady past. or he could have meant good, as in good for whatever the Others are using them for. hrrrrmmmm. the innocent part could explain why they take kids.
"I loved it when Bernard got a signal on the radio and it turned out to be Boone in the drug plane right before it crashed to the ground! That was great! It explains Boone’s end of the conversation which I’d all but forgotten!”
That NEVER clicked for me. Damn you’re good.
I’m learing from falling, Ii’m learning from falling down. Hard, lessons.
I love it that the island is labeled “quarantine.” I don’t know why, I just love that little detail (presumably will be important in future eps).
Lynda, do you watch Alias? If you do, I am curious as to how you think they compare since they are created by the same people.
I haven’t seen any of Alias yet, but seeing Lost and reading the TWOP forums with a bunch of Alias fans makes me want to. We’ll probably rent the first season on DVD disc by disc from BB Online. Speaking of which, I should probably go add that to our queue.

Thanks Maggie!
I just added about 100 DVDs worth of various TV shows to my blockbuster queue.

I got hooked on Alias after while waiting for a new season of 24 (on FOX with Kiefer Sutherland). I prefer Alias, again, for the character development and I like how the creators portray female characters. It’s quite addictive, with the same ongoing mythical/mysterious elements of Lost, although not nearly to the same maddening degree, if that makes any sense.
My husband and I are trying to get caught up in Alias, we are at the beginning of last season. What’s really funny is that we were just watching an episode, and heard Charlie’s band’s song from Lost--Driveshaft’s You are Everybody--playing in the background. Crazy!
