Lost: 02-09, “What Kate Did”

As usual, my thoughts on last night’s episode of Lost.  This post contains spoilers so please do not continue unless you’ve seen the episode!

Great things about last night’s episode:

- SAWYER WOKE UP!!!
- A tolerable amount of Ana-Lucia.  I can definitely take her in small doses like this.  I don’t think I’ll have a problem with her if she stops being all super-bitch to everyone.
- Hurley and his Bernard comment.  I didn’t see it coming either!  I thought Mister Eko was going to turn out to be Bernard when I first saw him.
- Mister Eko and Locke’s conversation leading up to the film fragment reveal.  Also Eko’s comment about not mistaking coincidence for fate.

I really liked this episode, but it seemed predictable and cliché.  At every twist I was able to guess what would happen next at least 10 seconds in advance.

Kate’s back-story was a little boring for my taste.  I don’t really understand why the Marshal thinks she’s so dangerous and was so obsessed with her.  As he said, she’s never done anything wrong before.  Blowing up a house and killing a guy inside it is a terrible thing to do, but I don’t think he should automatically assume she’s going to deal with all her problems this way.  Is blowing up daddy, robbing a bank and being responsible for the death of her boyfriend the only bad things she’s done?  Not to say it isn’t bad, but… I’d be more scared of Ana-Lucia than Kate.

We finally got into the love triangle.  Sawyer loves Kate.  Kate loves Jack because he’s “good”, but has feelings for Sawyer as well.  Jack likes Kate, but I don’t think he’s in love with her or anything.  At least I hope not.  He seems more into Ana-Lucia and frankly, I like them together and would prefer he stay away from Kate.  Kate seems way too childish for Jack.  Sawyer is perfect for Kate.

I didn’t really get why Sawyer reminded Kate so much of Wayne aside from them both being “bad guys”.  Sawyer isn’t a drunk, doesn’t beat women and aside from his snarky ass comments, he’s proven to be a pretty good guy when it all comes down to it.  Kate’s ridiculous.

A lot of people on the TWOP forums think the black horse was supposed to represent her dead, blown up daddy, but I don’t see how they’re drawing that conclusion.  She said she knew the horse, and I think that’s because she saw the horse before the night of the crash with the Marshal (hmmm, how many crashes has she been involved in with the Marshal now?  That one, the one causing her true love to die, the one with the one armed farm man Kate was staying with in Australia and the plane crash.  Any more?)

One last thing to say about Kate’s boring life.  When Kate went to visit her army father, Sayid was apparently on the television in the room!  I don’t like directly linking to pictures, so go to the link in this TWOP post to see Sayid on TV.  That’s at least the 2nd time someone’s been in the background on TV in someone else’s flashback.  In Jin’s flashback when he was in the home of the guy who gave him the puppy, Hurley was seen on the television in the background getting into a car.  I like the tie-ins the flashbacks have!

So… the film in the hatch seems to be cut to bits and I’m guessing the piece they found last night is not the only missing bit.  Someone felt the need to cut out the part stating that the computer in terminal three might tempt you to communicate with it, but that shouldn’t be done.  The film had already mentioned not to use the computer for any purpose other than entering the numbers - how much of a warning do these people need?  What’s the “incident”?  Who cut out the missing bits of film?  Are the other missing bits located in the other hatches?  Where ARE the other hatches?

So, do you all think that Walt is really communicating with Michael?  Or do you think it’s The Others trying to mess with him?  Going along with my telepathic/psychic theory, I think the computer might know what Michael wants to hear and this is an automatic response, not any particular human controlling the text.

According to the TWOP forums, WetWalt in a past episode told Shannon (in backward speak) that the button is bad and not to push it.

I think someone has probably already triggered an “incident” on this island, which would help explain all the weird things going on.  Any which way, this is one weird ass experiment going on and I can’t wait to find out more about it.

I’m off to finish up the episode thread and move on to the speculation without spoilers thread on TWOP.

Update:  Unrelated to this episode, I found a page translating the whispers heard in previous episodes by various people.  Freaky stuff!  So the whispers do mean something… and it seems to be The Others communicating with themselves.  A lot of the stuff they say when Shannon/Sayid are in the jungle right before she dies leads me to believe Boone is one of the voices.  Very, very interesting.

Maybe this is some sort of virtual reality the survivors are in and The Others are people on the outside who come in every once and again to interact with their experiment.  Perhaps once you redeem yourself and become “good” in the eyes of The Others, you are released via a death in the VR world and can join The Others in “reality”.  Seems far fetched and I don’t really care too much for the idea of a virtual reality.  I want what their experiencing to be real to them.

I like your telepathic/psychic theory of the computer. What are the chances that whoever is holding Walt allows him access to a computer?

Have you started watching Alias yet?  :D

As a matter of fact, we watched the pilot episde last night.  Very good!  We’ll probably watch another episode tonight.

I think you’re on to something with the voices.

Ooh, you’re getting into Alias too? It took me awhile to get into but I think season 2 and 3 really get good.

I LOVED this episode!  I’m with you on the horse - I don’t think it’s her dead father.  Though, the TWOP people might be drawing the conclusion b/c of the connection between the man Sawyer shot in the first season and the wild boar that kept tearing up his camp.

AL is far more tolerable when she is with Jack.  And I could watch Eko and Locke for hours.  And call me crazy, but I think it really is Walt.

I can’t believe no new episodes for weeks!

you know, i got the impression that the horse was supposed to be kate’s father too, but i’m not sure why. i guess since he father was clearly on her mind, and this is the first time the horse has shown up on the show. and like lissa said, it’s similar to the boar and sawyer.

i think there have been other Lost people in every person’s flashback. if i remember right, in one of Jack’s flashbacks to the airport, you can see Jin and Sun in the background. and i think there was someone in hurley’s flashbacks, but i can’t remember right now. i need the episodes on DVD smile
