Last week’s episode may have been disappointing, but this week more than made up for it. In fact, it earned an extra half star from me because: 1) it wasn’t directly about sex and 2) it furthered the Lex/Lana ‘ship I have going on.
There are two threads running through this episode. The first focuses on Jonathan’s senate race. His newly appointed campaign manager, Lois is getting him lots of exposure. Paw Kent becomes suspicious because he knows they don’t have enough money to cover this. He learns the truth about the money’s origin and as you might imagine is none too pleased. The second thread is the primary storyline. An ex-cop holds Lex and eventually Lana captive until he knows where the spaceship from the most recent meteor shower is located.
Spoilers inside! Do not continue if you haven’t seen the episode.
Lex and Lana’s relationship is paralleled quite a bit with Lana and Clark’s relationship. The spaceship, of course, was stolen right from under Lex’s nose and he has to deal with the fact that he’s been keeping this a secret from Lana. As we know, he loves Lana and seems genuinley disturbed that she might not forgive him for lying to her. Lana’s more than happy to forgive Lex since he fessed up.
Clark is afraid of telling Lana his secret because he doesn’t know if she will accept him if she knows. I think her constant forgiveness of Lex indicates she would accept whatever Clark tells her, however Clark should be wary of confiding in Lana for a different reason. Lana is way too close to Lex. For that reason alone, Clark shouldn’t tell her.
Sidenote: Boy needs to get a blow up doll or something to practice on so he’ll know whether or not it’s safe to stick his snake into Lana’s garden again. I don’t think Lana’s going to hold out for Clark much longer. Maybe she’ll go up to the mansion to fill her needs in the meantime, but that’s just my own twisted thinking.
Hi,
Thank you for your comment. Because Jonathan died in the Superman movie and some other incarnations of Superman, I think it’s almost too obvious for him to die in Smallville. I think it would be more surprising to have Martha die. Your point about Lana’s death advancing Lex’s charater to a villian is a good one. I hadn’t really thought about how close they’ve gotten until I saw “Lockdown” this week.
Nice review. I agree that Lana would most likely accept Clark’s secret, but also that it’s dangerous for Clark to tell her because of Lex. Funny sidenote, but I wish Clark and Lana never did it in the first place. That irresponsibility on Clark’s part really hurt his character, in my view. Also, it bugs me that he talks to Chloe about his relationship with Lana, and we saw more of that in this episode. She still seems to have strong feelings for Clark, and it must really hurt her to talk about Lana with him.
