Smallville: 05-14, “Vengeance”

Smallville: 05-14, “Vengeance”Rating: 4 stars

I’m ridiculously behind on reviews, so no summary this week.

I was impressed with how well they’re dealing so far with Jonathan’s death, but I’m also surprised by a few things, namely how they handled his Senate seat.  Surely, it can’t work that way in real life…

Smallville: 05-13, “Reckoning”

Smallville: 05-13, “Reckoning”Rating: 3-5 stars

Clark’s known for quite some time that since he was given the opportunity to come back to life, the life of someone close to him would be taken.  I was hoping it would be Lana and the episode started out showing such promise.  As I’ve stated elsewhere, Lana’s death would destroy Lex’s one last shred of humanity and his transformation into a villian would be complete.

There’s not much I can say about this episode without spoiling it, so meet me on the inside.

Smallville: 05-11, “Lockdown”

Smallville: 05-11, “Lockdown”Rating: 4 stars

Last week’s episode may have been disappointing, but this week more than made up for it.  In fact, it earned an extra half star from me because: 1) it wasn’t directly about sex and 2) it furthered the Lex/Lana ‘ship I have going on.

There are two threads running through this episode.  The first focuses on Jonathan’s senate race.  His newly appointed campaign manager, Lois is getting him lots of exposure.  Paw Kent becomes suspicious because he knows they don’t have enough money to cover this.  He learns the truth about the money’s origin and as you might imagine is none too pleased.  The second thread is the primary storyline.  An ex-cop holds Lex and eventually Lana captive until he knows where the spaceship from the most recent meteor shower is located.

Spoilers inside! Do not continue if you haven’t seen the episode.

Smallville: 05-10, “Fanatic”

Smallville: 05-10, “Fanatic”Rating: 2-5 stars

Boring episode focusing on two main points:  1) Paw Kent’s plans to run for senate may be thwarted either by his lack of campaign funds (for which Lionel Luthor is still more than willing to foot the bill) or by Lex’s fanatical, obsessed admirer.  2) Clark is scared that pumping and grinding into Lana with his super powers will send her to the hospital or worse, to her grave.

As for the second problem, we all knew Clark would have to deal with sex and his super powers eventually (considering he was powerless the first time) but did we really need an episode to address the issue head on?  As much as I swoon over Tom Welling, he’s still a kid and I just don’t want to think about him having sex (Wait… maybe… no.  No, I don’t.) The same thing could have been accomplished with a line or two here or there referencing his fear and then maybe telling Chloe afterwards that he had nothing to worry about.  Has the guy never pumped his own gas?  Shouldn’t he have a small clue as to how he will react?  I’m just saying…

Unfortunately, the Clark/sex storyline was far more interesting in the one about Lex’s fan who wants to help him take Jonathan out of the race.  It was predictable from the beginning.  For an episode all about Lex’s fan, they sure didn’t show enough Lex.

So far Season 5 has been all about sex.  I’m okay with that, but it’s time we get episodes with some substance.
